    Inspirations

I met a 12year old girl from central Africa with acute on chronic liver failure. She had an extensive work-up there with labs, MRIs and even a biopsy, but it was difficult for her healthcare providers to synthesize the case. Her family were fortunate enough to travel to South Africa for medical attention, labs were confirmed and she was started on Prednisone for autoimmune hepatitis and responded really well.
While Africa has its limitations, no child should suffer from an easily treatable or preventable condition.

Sometimes we seek the advice from our North American or European colleagues, but its either difficult for them to advise or for us to apply the recommendations in an African context. It’s also difficult for them to appreciate the influence of the infectious environments many of our children are exposed to, or the limited investigations and medication choices in some areas.

Africa doesn’t just have infections and malnutrition. Our children experience the full spectrum of conditions experienced in the 1st world, but often their presentations or intensity of their course differs. This will allow us a platform to express the African story.
